Chapter Name
Fort Defiance Chapter, NSDAR, was named after the fort built in 1794 under the direction of General Anthony Wayne, at the confluence of the Auglaize and Maumee Rivers. This was part of the last line of defenses constructed by American forces in the campaign preceding the Northwest Indian War's Battle of Fallen Timbers on August 20, 1794. The fort was a rough square with a blockhouse located on each corner. In addition to the stockade, a wall of earth eight feet thick was constructed. A ditch eight feet deep by fifteen feet wide protected the fortifications. After looking over the Fort, General Wayne is reported to have exclaimed: “I defy the English, Indians and all the devils in hell to take it." General Scott then remarked, “Then call it Fort Defiance.”
